Rödel LA (LA standing for Latin America) is a brand new clothing company straight out of Porto Allegra, Brazil. The name comes from the founder, 24 year old Helen Rödel who realised her love for fashion when she took at as a side course to her literature and advertising degree. To her “fashion represents the interplay between tradition and new forms, where high art challenges functionality and simplicity.”
The aim of the brand is to create clothing that enables those wearing it to “pass freely between urban and rural environments”, explaining that to her “music, technology or simply lying in a field of trees in a remote town can be raw material to be transformed into elements of her designs”.
The 2007 collection used a rectangular knit pattern as its basis, and although looking very 1970s inspired, in fact came about because of Helen’s own fascination with the possibilities of knit after she took part in a knitwear competition. But the pattern has done the brand well, with two of the designs winning the Bazar de Talentos fashion design competition, the biggest fair of its kind in South Brazil.
With plenty of new collections in the pipeline, this is definitely an interesting international company to keep an eye on.
